February 20: Career, College, and Life Readiness Day

Thursday, February 7, 2019

Hi OHS Students, Staff, and Families,

I have some exciting news! Moving forward, we will have some flexibility within our operational calendar to develop and provide Career, College, and Life Readiness experiences for our students within the school day. The purpose behind these days is to give our students a productive testing environment, provide students with real-life learning experiences, and, rather than missing class, give families and students release time necessary to conduct college visits or job shadow opportunities. Each day will have different activities for students in each grade level.

This year, we will have two Career, College and Life Readiness days. The first will take place on Wednesday, February 20, and will be focused on administering the state-mandated ACT exam for our Juniors and providing our Seniors with our annual Reality Store simulation. The second day is scheduled on Tuesday, April 9 so that our Freshman and Sophomores can participate in the ACT Aspire Exam in order for us to begin to identify their predicted ACT score.

Below are the details regarding the February 20 schedule of events. Please click on your specific grade-level links for details.

Freshman and Sophomores:
  • Release Day: Attendance at OHS not required.
  • Click here to review self-directed learning opportunities around career and college preparation.
Juniors:
  • ACT Testing: Report to OHS by 7:20am for ACT testing. Students will be released at approximately 12:30pm.
  • Click here to learn more details about the administration of the ACT and ACT WorkKeys exam.
  • Registration for the 2019 State ACT® will take place at school during a pre-test session on February 12. Students will complete the non-test portions of their answer documents including name, birth date and  address. Students will also have the option to complete a pre-test survey that includes questions about a variety of topics ranging from academic interests, to participation in extra-curricular activities, to religious affiliation. The information gathered in these surveys will be used to connect students to educational opportunities, college programs and scholarship prospects. All questions in the survey are included in the document Taking the ACT® Test. Students and parents are encouraged to review the survey questions in advance.
Seniors:
  • Reality Store Simulation: Report to the OHS Cafeteria at Main Campus by last name at these specific times for the Reality Store simulation:
    • A-E at 7:30am
    • F-J at 8:15am
    • K-M at 9:00am
    • N-Schl at 9:45am
    • Schm-Z at 10:30am
  • Click here to learn more about the Reality Store experience

As always, please feel free to reach out to me at CurtisJ@oasd.org if you have any questions. We are excited to be able to take a few days a year to focus on these important learning experiences and milestones as we prepare our Raccoons to be ready for life beyond high school!

Thanks!
Jason
