Details on Important College and Career Readiness Events and Schedule Changes

Tuesday, February 16, 2021

Hey Raccoons!

Don’t worry… This is not another COVID-19 update or communication about a change in instructional models! Phew. What a year!

All kidding aside, I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for all your support, patience, and understanding this past year. It’s almost been one year since we first had to close school due to the pandemic. There is no doubt that there have been so many challenges that our staff and Raccoons have had to overcome. As we start to move forward, it is important that we reset and consider how we will emerge from the pandemic, positioned to ensure we don’t skip a beat as we work to help each Raccoon become career, college, and life ready!

In the next two months, we will have two Career, College, and Life Readiness Days focused on determining the current individual academic progress of each of our underclassmen. While we certainly stand ready to support the social and emotional needs of each Raccoon, it is important that we assess and identify our progress toward college-readiness. Therefore, we will administer the ACT Exam to all Juniors on Tuesday, March 9 and the ACT Aspire Exam to all Freshmen and Sophomores on Thursday, April 22.

Tuesday, March 9, 2021: ACT Exam for all Juniors (No School for Freshmen, Sophomores, and Seniors)

We will administer the ACT exam to all Juniors on Tuesday, March 9 at OHS. All Juniors in the State of Wisconsin are required to take the ACT exam on this day. Similar to the last few years,  we will need our entire staff to help proctor this state-mandated exam, so there will be no school or virtual learning for our Freshmen, Sophomores, and Seniors on Tuesday, March 9. Students in the Oconomowoc Virtual Learning Community will be given specific details from Mr. Eichstadt soon.

Juniors should report to OHS at 7:20am as normal on Tuesday, March 9. We anticipate dismissal occurring around 12:30pm. You are welcome to go home at that time or stay until the buses depart at 2:47pm. Please click here to read this letter from Mrs. Anders, which outlines all the important information for this year’s ACT exam.

I also want to remind Junior families of our annual Junior Career Pathway Symposium occurring on Wednesday, March 10. The symposium will offer two 45-minute sessions where you can learn more about post-secondary pathways and what steps you should take now to be prepared for life after high school. Sessions include:

  • University of Wisconsin System: 2-year and 4-year campuses
  • Wisconsin Private Colleges & Universities
  • Wisconsin Technical College System
  • Entering the Military
  • Exploring Apprenticeships

These meetings will be held over Zoom. Session 1 will begin at 6:00 p.m. and Session 2 will begin at 7:00 p.m. Click here:  OHS Junior Career Pathway Symposium Sign-Up,  to sign up for one or two sessions that might interest you and your Raccoon! You will be sent a link to your session prior to the event.

Thursday, April 22, 2021: ACT Aspire Exam for all Freshmen and Sophomores

(No School for Juniors and Seniors)

All Freshmen and Sophomores will take the ACT Aspire Exam on Thursday, April 22. This is a non-school day for Juniors and Seniors. More information on the exam and schedule for the day will be shared later this spring. For now, please just mark your calendar!

Career-Readiness Opportunities

In the past, we have used our testing days to offer job shadow and life-readiness experiences for each grade level. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we cannot offer those same hands-on experiences as in the past.

We will continue to offer several virtual job-shadow and college-visit opportunities. These opportunities are outlined in our month Student Services Newsletter and in our Pride Homeroom sessions each week. To learn more about the various opportunities we have available for each student, please click here to check out the information from our School to Career Coordinator, Kyla Stefan.

Thank you again for all your support! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at CurtisJ@oasd.org.

Go Raccoons!
Jason
