Family Teacher Conferences at OHS

Tuesday, September 21, 2021

Hi Raccoon Families!

Believe it or not, we are approaching the halfway point of term 1, which means it’s time for our first set of family-teacher conferences for the school year. Please check out the details below regarding  the structures of family-teacher conferences at OHS.

Purpose of Family-Teacher Conferences
To start, please feel free to email teachers whenever you have questions or concerns about the progress of your Raccoon! It even helps to share a compliment and things that you feel are going well! The four designated family-teacher conferences throughout the year are designed to be extended conversations about one of the following topics:
  • Career and College Advancement Opportunities: A conversation focused on academic progression and learning opportunities that exist in the class and perhaps shed light into recommended future course work.
  • Academic Support and Brainstorm: A focused discussion on a student’s individual academic progress and sharing of ideas on how to best support the student’s academic needs in the class.

Conference Formats

Semester Kickoff Conferences (October and February)
Families will sign up in Skyward for a 10 minute face-to-face conversation with teachers. Details on sign-up are shared later in this letter.
  • Term 1: Thursday, October 7 (3:30-7:30pm) in a face-to-face  format within the teacher’s classroom or designated office area.
  • Term 3: Thursday, February 17 (3:30-7:30pm) in a face-to-face format within the teacher’s classroom or designated office area.

Please note our OVLC Core Teachers (English, Science, Math, and Social Studies) will also offer conferences during this time, but they will be virtual.

While we would love the opportunity to meet with every family, our teachers will only have 14 meeting opportunities during these two designated conference days. Given that most of our teachers are supporting over 100 students each semester, we encourage you to be intentional about your sign-up and schedule time to focus your conversation on academic support and career/college opportunities. If you are looking for a quick check-in and any updates on your Raccoon, please reach out directly to your child’s teacher through email or contact your child’s counselor.

Families will be able to sign up for a slot through Family Access beginning at about 12:00pm on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.

Mid-Semester Conferences (December and May)
Teachers will reach out to families to schedule individual 10-15 minute virtual conversations on their student’s individual needs and progress.
  • Term 2: Thursday, December 2 between 3:30-5:30pm in a virtual environment at the invitation of the teacher
  • Term 4: Thursday, May 5 between 3:30-5:30pm in a virtual environment at the invitation of the teacher

As always, you can email me at CurtisJ@oasd.org if you have any questions!

Plan for the October 12 Career, College, and Life Readiness Day!

Friday, September 10, 2021

Hey everyone!

Our October Career, College, and Life Readiness Day is on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. As a reminder, our Career, College, and Life Readiness Days are designed to give each Raccoon an opportunity to further develop their post-high school plans. Whether it is to help you discover interests and passions as you seek to be more GROUNDED in your purpose and values, learn more about opportunities that will help you be COMMITTED to your goals, or to provide you with learning experiences and assessments that will help you hold yourself ACCOUNTABLE, we hope these days will help guide you.

A summary of our days was shared earlier this summer and can be reviewed by clicking here.

On Tuesday, October 12, students in grades 9-11 will report to school as normal. Even though we will not have formal classes on this day, attendance is required. With the help of our community partners, our teaching staff has designed several opportunities. Below is a summary of the activities planned for each grade level.

Freshmen Day of Service
Freshmen will participate in service-learning experiences designed to help them explore a potential career of interest. The day will start with a reflection activity focused on understanding the purpose of service-learning. For several hours, students will engage in the projects before completing a reflective activity about their experience. Students are providing us ideas on their preference for an activity during Pride period. Please click here to see descriptions and videos about the project options available.

Quick Logistical Notes
  • Faculty advisors will communicate which room at OHS students should report to on the morning of October 12, during a special Pride meeting on Monday, October 4.
  • Details regarding lunch will be shared by your advisor.
  • Families are asked to log into Skyward and complete the permission slip under Forms.
  • Projects and reflection activities will end at about 1:45pm. You are welcome to get picked up at this time. However, you can also stay at OHS and socialize until buses depart at their regular time of 2:47pm.

Sophomore Career and College Visit Day
Sophomores will visit several businesses or educational institutions (university, tech college, training facility, etc.) that support a specific career cluster of interest. Students will be able to interact with business professionals in these places to learn about a variety of careers that may interest them. They will be encouraged to learn more about these businesses before the day of the event and will have an opportunity to reflect on their day, as well as make connections to opportunities at OHS. While we are still finalizing some plans, you can click here to view some of the options that we planned for our Sophomores. The document will continue to be updated in the coming days.

Quick Logistical Notes
  • Faculty advisors will communicate where students should report on the morning of October 12 during a special Pride meeting on Monday, October 4.
  • Students should bring their own lunch or money along as the group will stop somewhere for lunch.
  • Families are asked to log into Skyward and complete the permission slip under Forms.
  • Specific routes/career clusters will be posted to our Career, College, and Life Readiness website. Students will be able to select their top few choices.

Junior Practice ACT
Juniors will report to OHS to take the Practice ACT. This diagnostic test will provide us with data on your projected scores for the ACT. Remember, all juniors will take the statewide ACT exam on Tuesday, March 8. This practice exam is designed to give you an idea of where you currently stand. Once your results come in, we will help you design a personalized (and FREE!) ACT prep class that you will complete during Pride from December through February.

Once exams are scored, we will host several opportunities for families to meet with their counselor and Associate Principal Krista Werchowski to help you understand your scores and to learn more about the required prep class that will occur during Pride this winter. Please note that while our buses leave at 2:47pm, juniors will be dismissed from the exam at about 12:00pm and are welcome to go home at that time.

Please note, students who are taking the October 5 ACT exam are exempt from the Practice ACT and do not need to report to OHS on October 12. Rather, we will use your scores on the October exam to help design your prep class.

Senior Transition Planning
Seniors do not need to report to OHS on Tuesday, October 12. Take advantage of the day and schedule any last-minute college visits, job shadows, or other post-high school exploration opportunities. The Raccoon Exploration Center (REC) will be open for any seniors working on college and job applications and want a quiet and structured environment.

It’s going to be a great day! Go Raccoons!
