Temporary Shift to Virtual Learning at OHS

Hey Raccoons!

As you know, we will switch to a virtual learning platform from Tuesday, November 3-Friday, November 13, with the full intention that we return to full face-to-face instruction on Monday, November 16.

I know online learning brought many challenges this past Spring. However, unlike last year we will have live synchronous classes and will only be in the model for two weeks. We must work together to slow the transmission of the virus in our school and stop the number of large-scale quarantines we are experiencing. While these next few weeks may present new challenges, we will navigate this together as one-big Raccoon family.

The purpose of this communication is to outline our instructional expectations and operational plan for the next two weeks. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Materials & Belongings Pick Up
Students can come to campus between 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. any school day to pick up learning materials or personal belongings they will need during this virtual learning period.  There is no sign up required, you can visit any time during these hours.

Instructional Expectations
  • We will operate our classes in synchronous online meetings following an adjusted GREY day schedule. Modifications were made to our Grey Day schedule based on student, staff, and community feedback.
  • You can review the schedule by clicking here
  • Please note:
    • Each day will start with a “Morning Launch Period” from 7:00-8:25 a.m. This time is designed to help you transition your time to get ready for the day, complete your online seminars, and connect with classmates, teachers, or clubs as you usually would during Pride.
    • There will be two online seminars to complete during this two-week window:
      • Lesson 1 will be posted on November 3 and must be completed by November 6.
      • Lesson 2 will be posted on November 9 and must be completed by November 11.
  • We are expected to be on our Zoom calls for the duration of the entire period. We added 15-minute brain breaks between each block. Sitting on a screen all day is hard, so hopefully, you can get some fresh air and go for a walk.
  • Attendance norms should be followed. Eligibility and extracurricular participation are dependent on these records.  We will follow our standard practices:
    • Students who are late will be marked tardy.
    • Students who miss more than 15-minutes will be marked absent.
    • Students who do not attend class will be marked absent.
  • You do not need to report to study hall virtually. You are allowed to work independently during your scheduled time.

Limited On-Campus Operations will Continue
To emphasize, this is not a full shutdown. Athletics and extracurriculars can continue to occur within our current guidelines and mitigation practices. While our primary instructional model will be virtual for the next two weeks, we will offer limited face-to-face experience on campus. The status of these unique operations is outlined below:
  • Building Trades 3: Should continue to report to the job site daily, as communicated by Mr. Olson.
  • 18-21 Program: Will operate under their regular schedule at East Campus.
  • Option 2: Will remain open and operate under their regular hours.
  • School Farm: Will remain open for face-to-face instruction and FFA meetings/operations.
  • Apprenticeships and Offsite Work Locations: Can continue as scheduled.
  • Just Drive: Will operate as normal.
  • Athletics: Practices, tryouts, signing day, and other events can begin no earlier than 3:15 p.m. each day. Any modifications to schedules or games will be communicated from the athletic office. Students should enter through the Field House.
  • Library and Technology Services: Will be open for tech support from 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
  • Senior Directed Play: Will continue rehearsal as planned.
  • Front Office: Will be open daily from 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
  • Health Room: Will be open from 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. every day. Families may stop by to pick up any prescriptions they may need during the virtual learning period.
  • Make Up Exams: Will continue as scheduled in the evenings at East Campus.
  • Pre-ACT Makeup for Juniors: Will still occur as scheduled on Monday, November 2.
  • With classes ending at 2:45 p.m, any on-campus meetings or practices cannot start until 3:15 p.m.

East Campus WiFi Support
There will be a limited number of spots available for students to work from East Campus during the virtual learning period. This is intended to support students and families who need to lessen their WiFi burden or need WiFi access. Our buses are operating under their normal schedule. Students who select to work from East Campus can either be dropped off at East or take the bus to Main Campus and walk to East Campus. If you need help with WiFi or working from East Campus, please sign up here.

Food Service Support for Families
OHS students will have the opportunity to order meals during this virtual learning period.  Meals are packed based on the number of virtual school days your child will have each week and families can pick up those meals at OHS Main Campus. Student breakfast and lunch will continue to be free because of the USDA sponsored free meal program.

Symptom Reporting
It’s imperative that you continue to report any COVID symptoms, positive cases, and any doctor’s appointments time as usual. We are still trying to get a handle on the pandemic and the increased numbers in our community. We will continue to track attendance and positive cases during our absence.

Update: Term 1 Exams and Kicking Off Term 2

Thursday, October 29, 2020

Hey Raccoons!

As we head into term 1 exams, we recognize that we have a large number of our students quarantined due to COVID-19 exposures. Students who miss exams will work directly with their teachers to determine if the exam will either be:

  • Taken remotely through canvas
  • Delivered in class upon the students return
  • Given after school or in the evenings during our scheduled make-up exam window  between November 2-November 13
In addition, teacher grade books will now close at 10pm on Thursday, November 19. We will publish report cards on Friday, November 20. This ensures we have the most accurate grades reported on each student's transcripts.

As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, November 2. We will still begin our Term 2, as scheduled, on Tuesday, November 3.

If you have any questions please contact Krista Werchwoski at WerchowK@oasd.org or myself at CurtisJ@oasd.org

Good luck on your finals!

Term Exams (Policies and Procedures)

Wednesday, October 14, 2020

Hey Raccoons!

We are just two weeks away from the end of our first grading period! The last day of Term 1 is scheduled for Friday, October 30, and we anticipate publishing report cards by Friday, November 6.

Last spring, we announced that we were changing our assessment schedule to include final term exams as part of the grading and assessment structure at OHS. Term 1 Exams will be held on:

  • Thursday, October 29 (Blocks A and C)
  • Friday, October 30 (Blocks B and D)

The introduction of final exams is just one more way we are trying to instill a culture of accountability at OHS. Just a few reminders regarding our exam policies and structures:

  • Exams count for 10% of a student’s final grade for the term.
  • Students cannot reassess on exams.
  • All 504/IEP accommodations will be provided for each exam.
  • We will run a modified schedule for the last two days of the term in order to allow for students to have enough time to complete their exams and build in some study support for students. You can view the bell schedule by clicking here.
  • Skinnies and classes that do not report grades for Term 1 will have regular class periods during their assigned meeting times on October 29 and 30.

Below are just some quick logistical notes about our schedule on our exam days this year:

  • Exams end at 12:10pm and lunch is offered until 1:00pm. Students are technically dismissed after their last exam if they have a ride home. Buses will still operate under our normal schedule and leave OHS at 2:47pm.
  • On Thursday and Friday afternoon, students are welcome to stay until 2:40 pm and participate in a variety of activities we will be offering, including time to study for upcoming exams. Attendance is not required, but it will be a fun way to blow off some steam after a stressful couple of days.
  • On Thursday, October 29, we will be offering picture make-up/retake day in the library from 12:15pm-3:00pm.

Thanks!
Jason

Happy Homecoming Week, Raccoons!

This Sunday we launch our annual Homecoming Week celebrations. While many of our traditions are postponed, modified, or cancelled, it’s important that we still come together and celebrate our Raccoon Pride this upcoming week! Homecoming is not just about a game, dance, reunions, and parades, it’s a recognition that our High School serves as a pillar in our community. It unites all generations and backgrounds under our common identity as residents of the Oconomowoc Area. We all know you can’t hide that Ocon Pride, so check out all the plans below and find a way to share in the fun this upcoming week as we live out this year’s theme and “Celebrate Good Times, Ocon!”

OHS Update: Quarantine Notice Clarification- Sorry!

Saturday, October 3, 2020

Hello OHS Students and Families-

I’m sending another email today, and I apologize for all of the emails, but I want to share more information to help clear up the confusion about the quarantine messages from yesterday and today.

We did have a large number of student quarantines identified yesterday and our team has been working hard to complete the contact tracing and notification process, which has been lengthy and challenging.

As you know, a quarantine email was accidentally sent to all OHS families early this morning. This email was intended for a specific list of students who need to quarantine because they were exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 while at OHS or while participating in OHS activities. We attempted to recall the email but were unable to do so. A second email was then sent in an attempt to notify parents of the mistake, but that message wasn’t clear and caused more confusion.

I know this was frustrating for families and I’m sorry the mistake happened. I share in your frustration and our team will meet on Monday to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Our team spent this morning updating attendance information for all students in Skyward. We’re asking all OHS families to log in to Skyward Family Access and check their child’s attendance record. Please review the steps below to confirm whether your child should attend school on Monday, October 5, or whether they need to begin the quarantine process:

  • Once you log into Skyward Family Access, click on the Attendance tab on the left side of the screen.
  • If your child needs to quarantine, you will see attendance entered for each date of your student’s quarantine along with a quarantine code next to each date (i.e., “Quarantine Close Contact/School Contact").
  • If this code does not exist in your student’s attendance record, they should report to school on Monday, October 5.
  • If your student is required to quarantine beginning 10/5/2020, please note the final date of quarantine entered for your student. There are multiple quarantines currently in place, and it is important that your student is aware of their quarantine end date.
  • Students placed in quarantine will receive additional information from an Associate Principal on their learning plans while they’re away from school.

I apologize again for the confusion and mistaken emails today. I understand that the quarantine process is challenging for families and students and the mistakes today only make that harder. This is a new experience for all of us and we’ll learn from these errors and improve the notification process so this doesn’t happen again.

Have a great weekend!

Jason
